It’s spring, and although typical Seattle drizzle suggests otherwise, you don’t have to wait for a break in the wet and gray to get excited about the change of season. Here are five ways to get out and feel spring even if you still need an umbrella.

1

Stroll through the expansive aisles of flowers, the rows of leafy trees, and green shrubs inside Swanson’s Nursery, an urban oasis in Seattle since 1942. Whether you have an acre to plant or a balcony thirsty for color, the experience is full of natural inspiration. Stop at the café for coffee and a baked treat. Tables are tucked in among the lush plant life, surrounding a small water feature filled with giant koi that kids find enchanting.

2

Discover the whimsical yet socially disruptive performance art of Anida Yoeu Ali at the Seattle Asian Art Museum. The multimedia installation includes two live performances by Tacomabased artist Ali, who wears a hybrid of religious clothing in The Buddhist Bug and The Red Chandor, intended to disarm viewers and offer a way to experience unfamiliar identities with joy and wonder. The show runs through July 7.

3

Refresh your wardrobe in preparation for sunshine with something bright and stylish. The Refind Closet in Madison Park is a luxury consignment store packed with seasonal designer clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories. If traveling to shop in person is too far, you can watch live, daily shopping shows on Instagram to purchase from wherever you are. In need of a spring clean? Take your designer brand items in for resale.

4

Emerge from that black puffer cocoon and celebrate the end of winter with a mani-pedi. There’s nothing like peeling off your socks for a good soak and foot massage. Among the many fine nail shops to choose from across the city, you may have your favorite. Mine is Apollo Nails and Spa. With each appointment, the skill and professionalism are consistent. My feet and hands always leave happy.

5

Taste spring with the seasonally inspired flavors at Copine, a 2023 James Beard Award finalist, located in Ballard. Whether you’re there for a celebration or a simple night out, the elevated cuisine transforms all meals into special occasions. Beautifully plated and served enthusiastically by knowledgeable and devoted staff, dinner is a three-course, prix fixe menu based on French techniques with global influences. You can walk in, but make a reservation to ensure a table.

A chaotic cook, the Herbfarm, food, and feminism

Spring is the new holiday season, at least when it comes to local authors releasing new food-centric books and cookbooks. This season, they’re raining down on us like cherry blossoms in the UW quad and sprouting up faster than Yakima asparagus.
