The Pew Research Center reports that 30 percent of U.S. teens say they have been affected by hurtful text messages, Facebook posts and the like. Mike Donlin wants to cut that number to zero. A program consultant for Seattle Public Schools’ prevention-intervention services, Donlin spearheaded creation of a new cyberbullying curriculum this year for Seattle teachers, training them to better equip students, parents and themselves to deal with the issue. Seattle was one of the first districts in the nation to adopt such a broad-based curriculum. School districts across the country have now expressed interest in adopting similar programs. Engaging parents in the process is crucial, Donlin says, because they need to have some familiarity with “places” their children frequent. “It’s the kind of thing that’s hard to deal with,” he says, “because adults, by and large, don’t enter the cyberworld.”
